Dali Cat-shaped Clay Figurines on Display in Changsha

The Dali Wamao Works Exhibition National Tour Wuhan and Changsha Station & Solo Exhibition of Clay Figurine Master Su Longxiang is being held at a woodmaking studio at Changsha Xihu Park from December 7, 2024 to January 7, 2025.Cat-shaped clay figurines known as Wamao are considered auspicious objects by the people in Yunnan.

More than 100 Wamao works are on display. They are crafted by Su Longxiang, a fourth-generation clay and dough sculpture artist of Fengyi in Dali, and an inheritor of the provincial intangible cultural heritage item—clay figurines.

Wamao is an auspicious beast in Yunnan folklore, which symbolizes good luck, peace, loyalty, and protection. The clay figurine, bearing profound cultural connotations, helps promote intangible cultural heritage exchanges and interactions between Dali and Changsha.
